ACUS to Co-Chair Working Group of White House Legal Aid Interagency Roundtable

Conference and DOJ to Explore Best Practices for Hearings Involving the Self-Represented

Washington, D.C., October 5, 2015 – The President recently announced the establishment of the Legal Aid Interagency Roundtable (LAIR), which will work to increase access to justice for underserved communities. The Roundtable will include representatives from a number of departments and agencies, including the Administrative Conference of the United States.

ACUS will co-chair a working group of the LAIR on Self-Represented Parties in Administrative Hearings with the Access to Justice Initiative (ATJ) from the Department of Justice, which will seek to increase the fairness, accuracy, and efficiency of administrative hearings.

The working group will also include the Social Security Administration (SSA), Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR), Board of Veterans Appeals (BVA), and Internal Revenue Service (IRS), whose members will share information about their adjudicatory practices and ideas for improvement.
