On September 22, 2011, the Administrative Conference and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) co-hosted a workshop on promising agency practices to ensure that individuals with limited English proficiency (LEP individuals) have meaningful access to administrative hearings and proceedings pursuant to Executive Order 13166. Over 70 participants from various federal agencies had the opportunity to engage in collaborative dialogue with a number of representatives from agencies and share ideas about how to provide meaningful access for LEP individuals. The workshop featured two panels of experts from within the federal government, who discussed addressing language access issues in federal agency administrative hearings and proceedings and a variety of promising practices, including the cost-effectiveness of addressing language barrier issues prior to a hearing or proceeding.
